Coastside Family Medical Center Receives $1.32 Million Grant from Stanford Hospital & Clinics

Debt Relief Allows Family Practice Center to Continue Operating Independently

Stanford, Calif. — Stanford Hospital & Clinics (SHC) today announced a $1.32 million grant to Coastside Family Medical Center (CFMC) of Half Moon Bay. CFMC serves more than 8,000 residents on the San Mateo County coast, providing family practice and pediatric services and offering primary care, OB/GYN, x-ray and lab services, a confidential teen clinic and referrals to specialists. The agreement comes as CFMC solidifies its role as an independent non-profit agency providing critical health services to the coast’s rural population.

The grant concludes Stanford Hospital’s funding support for the clinic, which reorganized its operations to become an independent non-profit in late 2001. At that time, SHC ended its funding relationship with the clinic, then known as Stanford Coastside Medical Clinic, while assisting the facility and the surrounding community through the re-organization process. SHC also subsidized CFMC’s lease and donated medical supplies, equipment and furniture. The grant is in lieu of any outstanding rent obligations owed by CFMC between October 1, 2001 and October 31, 2007.

“Since 2001, the clinicians, health providers and community have been working together to achieve this independence,” said Everett Ascher, CFMC board chair. “This grant, along with the support and goodwill we’ve received from SHC over the years, will allow our clinic to provide the high quality healthcare services every community deserves.”

After operating the clinic at a loss for more than six years, SHC formally ended its funding of the five-physician practice in 2001. A group of Coastside citizens led the effort to form a new entity that would continue to serve the needs of the community, founding CFMC in October 2001. When SHC transferred all clinic responsibilities to CFMC, Mills-Peninsula Health Services stepped in to facilitate the transition, providing both financial and in-kind support. Community members and leaders in the region subsequently worked together with SHC to establish an expanded non-profit family care practice for rural coast side residents. Today, the clinic has formed a solid leadership team between the executive staff and board members, strengthening the financial viability necessary to provide care for the Coastside community.

"Stanford Hospital and Clinics is proud to partner with clinics working to improve essential healthcare services for residents in their community,” said Martha Marsh, President and CEO of SHC. “We commend Coastside for their efforts and we wish them continued success."

Mills-Peninsula Health Services continues to collaborate with CFMC by providing on-site laboratory and x-ray services, and a proposed partnership with the County of San Mateo could provide ongoing financial support to house the clinic. The CFMC team is excited to enter a new era of service to the Coastside. A reception will be held at CFMC on December 11th, 2007 at 6 p.m. to honor the generosity of SHC. We invite the community join us for cocktails and h’ors deurves.
